Even though school is not in session for most people, RIT and the surrounding area still have a lot going on in the summer. In particular, Park Point has myriad events all summer, and there’s always something to see or do in the evening. While RIT’s Bikeshare Program lets you explore the exciting local area, there is plenty to do just around the corner.
Every summer, Park Point lines up a bunch of great activities to keep students busy and involved in the community during the few months of the year that Rochester isn’t a snowball. Between Park Point’s main college foodie hangout, Lovin’ Cup, and the stuff that goes on in the nearby green, you’ll find that there is no shortage of things to do. Here’s a list of some events to look forward to, this summer.
Lovin’ Cup Events
Here is a selection of events being put on by Lovin’ Cup, LLC, specifically. The restaurant keeps an updated list of weekly events on their website, if you’re ever interested in seeing what they have going on, on any given day of the week (there’s always something!).
- Brooklyn Brew Ha-Ha — Wednesday, July 8, 7 p.m.
The Brooklyn Brew Ha-Ha is a beer sampling event, open to students for $13 and to the general public for $15. The Brew Ha-Ha will feature a sampling of beers by the Brooklyn Brewery, as well as a selection of snacks and hors d’oeuvres, provided by Lovin’ Cup. Since this is an event that involves alcohol, it is limited to the 21-and-up crowd. Those who do attend should remember to drink responsibly, of course.
- Geeks Who Drink — Every Monday, 8 p.m.
Geeks Who Drink is a group of colorful people who come to Lovin’ Cup once a week and run a trivia night. Trivia questions include pop culture, name that tune, name that movie, and much more! Winners receive a bar tab, as well as other fun prizes. This event is geared toward the 21+ crowd, but it is not exclusive to that group. The event is not interpreted, and it does often feature song clips. You can follow them on their website, here.
- Open Mic Night — Every Tuesday, 8:30 p.m.
If you enjoy making your own music, come show off your skills at an open mic night. Not much of a musician? Come enjoy other people’s work while you enjoy some great food. The restaurant will be filled with music and life, inside and out. Musicians, if you’re interested in entering, details can be found on the Open Mic Night calender page, here.
- Salsa Night — July 30, 8 p.m.
Come dance the night away at Lovin’ Cup’s Salsa Night, brought to you by Essence of Rhythm. There will be dance lessons offered before 11 p.m. Tickets are $5 before 11 p.m. and $10 after 11 p.m., so get there early!
- Captain Lawrence Brew Ha-Ha — August 12, 7 p.m.
Like the Brooklyn Brew Ha-Ha, the Captain Lawrence Brew Ha-Ha is a beer tasting event with food and brews, this time provided by the Captain Lawrence Brewing Company. Admission is $15 for the public and $13 for students.
Park Point Events
Park Point’s big summer event is its annual summer concert series, which features three free Friday night concerts, played on the green. They’re open to the public and, having attended them in years past, I can recommend them wholeheartedly. Let’s check out the lineup for the remaining two concerts, this year.
- July 10 — 6 p.m.
This concert, coming up this Friday, will feature bands TrYsT, Teagan & the Tweeds, and See Alice. They will be performing all kinds of rock, from TrYsT’s selection of “rock, pop, country and classic,” to Teagan & the Tweeds “energy-packed Americana roots rock,” to See Alice’s 70s and 80s covers. Most of the numbers will be covers of rock hits from across the decades, though there may be some original songs thrown into the mix, as well.
- August 14 — 6 p.m.
The August concert is the final show of the Park Point Summer Concert Series. Also on a Friday evening, the show will feature local favorite, Springer. Springer plays fantastic covers of many classic rock hits. Along with Springer, the band Guy Smiley will be playing some sweet rock covers, that night. The third band, according to the Park Point posters, is TBD. I did a Google search to be sure, but I think that means that they don’t know who Band #3 is yet, rather than that being the band’s name.
So, there you have it! An affordable summer of fun at Park Point! Whether you come by yourself, bring a friend, or make a friend at the events, Park Point’s summer activities are sure to be a blast!
