Approaching its third anniversary on April 13, Rochester Institute of Technology’s Foodshare Center is a campus amenity that all started as a Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ritfoodshare/about/) letting students know where extra food can be found on campus (from events, programs, etc.). With the goal of supplying food to members of our campus community in need and reducing food waste in a pantry setting, the Foodshare Center has become one of our campuses most utilized resources.

Located at 113 Riverknoll, the RIT Foodshare Center is run by RIT’s Center for Residence Life, and staffed by resident advisors. In collaboration with RIT’s Student Government, the School of Communication, and the Sustainability office, the center has been quite the success over the past few years. Open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., 5 p.m. – 7 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., feel free to stop by for a few food items! While the center’s offerings are targeted at the RIT community, it is open to members of the general public. Individuals walk in and are greeted by someone sitting at the front desk. After swiping your ID, individuals are encouraged to take a plastic bag. After entering the food pantry, individuals are allowed to take up to five items per day.

So the RIT Foodshare Center doesn’t sound like something that you may utilize? Well, there are plenty of other ways to get involved. Donations are accepted during the Center’s hours of operation. Both perishables and non perishables are accepted, as long as they have not been opened. Canned goods that are nearing or at the written expiration date are also accepted. If you make a donation during RIT’s hockey season, you may even be able to score a free ticket to the next game while supplies last. Don’t have anything to donate? Don’t worry there are still more ways to help! Stop by the Center if you want to help sort the donations, and get them on the shelves quicker. If you don’t have anything to donate, or the time to volunteer at the Center, you can make a donation at an amount of your choosing at https://securelb.imodules.com/s/1624/index-giving.aspx?sid=1624&gid=1&pgid=705&cid=1466&fid=1466&gfid=800&bledit=1&dids=611 (anything is appreciated).
